Tl dr Pick Kichikuou if you like the concept and 02 if you're bored, otherwise skip straight to Sengoku since you don't lose much and is self-contained and is pretty much the best game in the series. Is just really, really good in every way.
#SENGOKU RANCE BONUSES FREE#
Great characters, music, pacing, humor, dialog, character development, gameplay, replay value (True Route is the first, then you can play "What ifs" if you met certain conditions) thanks to not only different routes but also bonuses (more actions per turn, gold, characters unlocked from the start.) and a Free for All mode unlocked after you beat the game once where you can pick a whoever you want and conquer JAPAN. It has some interesting concepts and ideas that are being used in older games, but if you want to play it do it BEFORE Sengoku, otherwise it could be kind of disappointing going back to it and expecting it to be as good as the former. Combat is garbage (seriously), and characters are mostly shallow (since there are SOOOO many) besides the obvious main characters.

Kichikuou is just a (bad) prototype of Sengoku. Is very short though, so play it if you want. 02 is actually kind of bearable, but is very average overall and insignificant besides showing Maria and Shizuka. Rance 1,3 and 4 are decent for introducing characters and world building in general, but they have aged pretty badly in pretty much everyway and you're just better of reading a summary. Have heard good things about both VI and IX, but they're also untranslated). Out all of those I would only recommend Sengoku (Quest is great, but untranslated. I've played Rance 1, 02, 3, 4, Kichikuou, Sengoku and a bit of Quest. It has character from other games that you would probably appreciate more if you have played the older ones (Kanami, Maria, Rance himself.) but you can jump into it with no knowledge of any of the others. I'm actually interested to play it from the beginning but not all the prequel are translated, are only the worthwhile one translated or something ? or should i just stick to sengoku rance ?
